Indonesia avowed its commitment at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) to do actual work to cope with climate change, Forestry and Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya stated.
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) reaffirmed the country's commitment during his bilateral meetings with several world leaders and during the COP26 Summit in Glasgow, Scotland, the UK, Nurbaya noted in a statement obtained here on Tuesday.
"President Jokowi's key message was that Indonesia would not work in rhetoric, but it would do actual work. We will not make a promise for something we cannot do," she remarked.
Among the efforts made by the country to mitigate the impact of climate change are lowering the deforestation rate to its lowest level, implementing the social forestry program, peatland and mangrove rehabilitation, and preventing forest and land fires.
Nurbaya remarked that at the meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, President Jokowi stressed that Indonesia had focused on green economy-based cooperation.
During his meeting with Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa, Jokowi encouraged Slovenia to push for the completion of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
“President Jokowi regrets indication of discriminative treatment in the agricultural supply chain," Nurbaya noted.
During the meeting, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Pierre Trudeau had met with Jokowi and expressed his full support to Indonesia's G20 Presidency in 2022.
"We will not stop working after the implementation of these actions. In fact, we have more works to do upon our arrival from (COP26) in Glasgow, not only for the good of the Indonesian people but also for tackling the global climate change through the FoLU Net-Sink 2030," she affirmed.
Indonesia has also adopted a long-term strategy to achieve low-carbon development and climate resilience in 2050 and a detailed roadmap to achieve net zero emissions in 2060 or earlier.
