Warukin Airport, Tabalong District, South Kalimantan, will reopen to serve commercial flights, said the regent.

Regent Anang Syakhfiani to provincial government pressroom reporters said that the Pertamina-owned airport to resume operation before Tabalong's anniversary early December 2021.

"We have held a meeting with all relevant parties discussing the preparation to reopen Warukin Airport for commercial," he said.

The plan is it will serve flights from Tanjung Oil City to Balikpapan and Surabaya as well as return flights.

It will also serve the Tanjung-Jakarta route and return flight. Especially flight to Jakarta it will land at Halim Perdana Kusama Airport.

"Hopefully there will be no obstacles, and the airport reopening plan goes according to the plan," he said.

Anang also said that the district government has prepared 100 hectares of land for the airport to serve a wide-body aircraft, whereas the current runway is only 1,400 meters long.

"In order to fly large-bodied aircraft, we have readied an area of 100 hectares," he said.

The Regent revealed that the preparation of the airport is an effort of Tabalong to be one of the buffer zones for the new state capital in North Penajam Paser District, East Kalimantan.

Tabalong is quite close to the country's new capital, that it needs adequate transportation facilities, including airport and toll roads.
