Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) keeps striving to develop the fishery sector to support people's economy which in turn has an impact on improving people's welfare.
One of its latest efforts was organizing the "International Conference of Fisheries and Marine 2021" online by presenting a number of domestic and foreign experts.
"We encourage people to understand and master technology, so they can develop it for a wider improvement of their welfare," said ULM Rector Prof Sutarto Hadi after opening the conference at the ULM General Building, Banjarmasin, Monday (Sept 20, 2021).
The conference themed "Development of Fisheries Wetlands Technology Based on 5.0 to Support for Populist Economic", according to Sutarto, is very important for the future progress of the sector.
Indonesia's sea of about 3,273,810 square kilometers or 62 percent of the country's area, according to him, is a tremendous potential yet has been not fully worked on for the welfare of the community.
Sutarto asked academics of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine to concentrate more on developing the marine fisheries which have not been fully exploited.
Meanwhile, in freshwater fisheries, ULM contribution has so far been quite maximal, such as developing the cultivation of snakehead fish (locally named haruan) and climbing perch (papuyu) --both have good prices and contribute to inflation.
In addition to academics, the conference was also attended by business actors in fisheries and related officials.
The speakers who attended were Dr Untung Bijaksana as a doctor of haruan cultivation from ULM, Prof Tri Winarni Agustini PhD from Diponegoro University, Ir Supari MSi from Semarang University.
Then two foreign speakers, Prof Michael Rice Ph.D. from Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences, University of Rhode Island, United States, and Prof Gianfranco Risuleo from Research Scientist Sapienza of University of Rome, Italy.
"A number of issues were presented, including management of fisheries resources, socio-economics, aquaculture as well as marine science and capture fisheries," said the Dead of ULM's Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Dr. Agustiana.
Also present were Minister of Marine Sakti Wahyu Trenggono and Governor of South Kalimantan Sahbirin Noor.
The activity was coupled with the 13th scientific meeting of the Indonesian Fishery Product Processing Society (MPHPI).
