South Kalimantan increased 16 river-care communities (KPS) after the Kalimantan III River Management Agency (BWS) held an institutional fostering and empowering of Barito River water resources management.

A total of 40 participants from all districts and cities throughout South Kalimantan took part in the two days (12-13 July) event in Banjarbaru.

With the addition of 16 KPS, South Kalimantan now has 30 KPS, while nationally there are 577 KPS.

The activity, which was opened by the Head of the Kalimantan III River Management Agency, represented by Ardiansyah, an official of the agency, presented two speakers on the first day. One of them was Head of South Kalimantan Environment Agency Mrs. Hanifah Dwi Nirwana, S.T., M.T. She spoke about the government's role in conserving water resources.

The second day featured three speakers, namely Mohammad Ary with the title Developing River Care Community, as well as sharing the experience in forming a community.

Ahmad Arifin with the title Conservation, Arrangement and Utilization of Natural Resources as Ecotourism Potential in South Kalimantan, while Hasan Zainuddin spoke about making environmental activists as journalists in an effort to raise the spirit of community to maintain rivers.

Meanwhile, the formation of KPS was motivated by the conditions of rivers in South Kalimantan. The more damage to the environment has an impact on the river condition, thus the role of the community is needed to preserve the river.

However, the river is the lifeblood of not only humans but also animals and plants. The existence of the river indicates that there is still life, the destruction of the river will also damage life.
