An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 struck North Sulawesi Province on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The epicenter of the earthquake, which hit at 12:00 West Indonesia Time (WIB), was located 0.37 degrees northern latitude and 123.75 degrees eastern longitude, or 26 kilometers southwest of Bolaanguki-Bolsel, at a depth of 185 kilometers, the agency stated.
The tremor was the last in a series of earthquakes that affected North Sulawesi in the past few weeks.
On May 24, an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 hit Tahuna in Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi, according to the BMKG.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 236 kilometers southwest of Tahuna at a depth of 10 kilometers, the agency noted on its official website www.bmkg.go.id, gempa.
No early tsunami warning was issued.
An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 is considered to be of moderate intensity and capable of causing considerable damage on land.
