Approximately 100 hectares of rice plants in Pulau Laut Timur Sub-district, Kotabaru District, South Kalimantan, inundated by floods after several hours of heavy rain in the coastal area.
Head of Pulau Laut Timur Sub-district Tri Basuki on Wednesday said that the rice plant swamped by floodwater had only been planted for two weeks to a month.
"The possibility of crop failure has not yet been seen, but the result of being flooded will at least affect the growth and development of rice plants," he said.
The swamped rice plants are scattered in Kulipak Village, Berangas Village, and Teluk Masjid Village, in Pulau Laut Timur.
In addition, to be worried about damage by being swamped, it is feared that the rice plants will not be able to grow and develop normally, due to lack of irrigation.
"Only a small proportion of rice fields have irrigation channels, so it is worried that the target of production of grain will not be achieved," he said.

However, Tri Basuki optimistic that the flood, which inundated rice plants in three villages located on the north coast of Pulau Laut will soon recede, along with the receding seawater.
"Accidentally there was high rainfall last night, and sea tide was high enough to cause flooding," said Tri Basuki.
Residents' houses were inundated, also a number of public facilities, including official residence of sub-district head, a mosque, an early childhood education (PAUD) building, an Agriculture Counseling Office, the Berangas Village office, and others.
According to temporary data, about 20 houses were inundated in Kulipak Village, 20 to 30 houses in Berangas Village, and around 30 in Teluk Masjid Village.
No report of casualties in the flood, but people's activities were disrupted by the flood which began Tuesday night.
