South Kalimantan Provincial Police has recorded 305 fatalities in traffic accidents throughout 2020.

South Kalimantan Provincial Police Chief Insp.Gen. Rikwanto said that the traffic accidents which caused the death of the victim are used as evaluation material so it could be suppressed in the following years.

"I ask Traffic Police to further increase patrol activities and traffic control, including to increase caution signs at traffic accident-prone points," he said in Banjarmasin, Saturday.

Socialization and education on traffic safety to the public, according to him, should be intensified, so that the orderly and obedience to the rule and traffic signs could grow from self-awareness.

This is very important because orderly on the road is a real effort for the safety of oneself and other road users, not afraid of being ticketed by the police.

"We should be able to change some people's mindset that obedience only when there is traffic police on the road. If the police are not there, then many will violate," said Rikwanto.

Director of Traffic Police Sr Comr (Kombespol) Andi Azis Nizar added that this year there was a decrease in accident cases from 806 in 2019 to 614 cases in 2020 or down by 24 percent.

So is the number of the death toll fell by 20 percent from 383 in2019 to 305 in 2020. While the number of traffic violations down 48 percent to 48,711 this year.

"During the COVID-19 pandemic, we reduce law enforcement activities by using tickets, and the number of violations decreased as well. We prioritized sympathetic operation in the form of education on health protocol, such as distributing masks to road users," he said.
