Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan,  (Antaranews Kalsel) - The South Kalimantan capital city of Banjarmasin was blanketed with black haze on Friday morning.


People could not see farther than 1,000 meters ahead forcing cars and other vehicles to slow down because of the black smokes believed from bush fires.

Earlier flights schedules were disrupted at the Syamsudin Noor airport of Banjarmasin.

The haze has spread to other regions as far as Riau, North Sumatra and Jambi in Sumatra disrupting flight schedules.

The Meteorology and geophysics office in Pakanbaru, Riau, said on Thursday winds could bring haze from forest fires in Sumatra to Singapore and Malaysia shortly.

"The winds are blowing from south to Malaysia and Singapore in the north," an official of the agency Sanya Gautami said .

Sanya said the winds blew at a speed of 10-50 kilometers per hour.

He said Riau, especially Pekanbaru, had been cloudy with black haze over the past several days.

The regional office of Disaster Control Agency (BPBD) said there are a number of hot spots in Sumatra mainly in Riau.

The bush fires followed long drought burning peat forests in wide areas in Sumatra and Kalimantan.

The regional authorities began to distribute maskers freely to the cyclists and pedestrians as many people began o suffer breathing difficulty .

Riau Governor Annas Maamun told the people to reduce outdoor activities.

Haze has been a problem every year affecting not only Indonesia but also neighboring countries mainly Malaysia and Singapore.

The government has failed to cope with the problems caused by bush fires in the country mainly in Kalimantan and Sumatra.
