The Provincial Government of South Kalimantan wants Tapin District to become one of the centers for hybrid corn farming in the province, said an official.

"Today we harvest hybrid maize in Tapin, marvelous, we can see for ourselves the vast expanse of corn tree. We are trying to make Tapin one of the centers for hybrid maize in South Kalimantan after Tanah Laut," said Head of South Kalimantan Agriculture, Food Crops, and Horticulture Agency H Syamsiar Rahman during the hybrid corn harvest in Tapin, Thursday (Sept 10, 2020).

Syamsiar said, Tapin is one of the food barns in South Kalimantan. Besides rice, Tapin cultivates Hiyung chili which is famous for its spiciness.

"The potential of agriculture in Tapin is amazing. In the future we will try to invite the Minister of Agriculture to participate in the corn harvest in Tapin," he said again.

Meanwhile, Regent of Tapin HM Arifin Arpan said that the hybrid corn plantations have also boosted the tourism sector.

"Many residents from neighboring areas visit here just for taking pictures, and that can increase the economy of the local residents," he said.

According to the regent, the hybrid corn ready to harvest in Lokpaikat Village, Lokpaikat Sub-district, covers more than 15 hectares, and there is still 200 hectare of land ready to be planted.

"We already have a market share for our hybrid maize from animal feed companies in Tanah Laut," he said.
