The Sub-directorate IV Tipidter (certain criminal acts) of the South Kalimantan Police's Directorate of Special Crime Invetigation had uncovered the trade of protected animals which were the endemic of Kalimantan.
"The latest were two cases we disclosed. A total of 14 animals had been confiscated," said Director of Special Crime Invetigation Sr Comr (Kombes) Masrur here on Tuesday.
On July 9, the team led by Head of Sub-directorate IV Tipidter Adj Sr Comr (AKBP) Endang Agustina had arrested FJ who sold two sun bears. He was caught on Jalan Ahmad Yani, South Paringin, Balangan.
Then on Juli 13, a 30 year old IR was caught in Loktabat Utara, Banjarbaru, while doing a transaction of 12 protected animals.
The 12 animals consisted of one bekantan (proboscis monkey), one bondol eagle (Haliastur indus), five brontok eagles (Changeable Hawk-eagle), one gold tiung (hill myna bird or gracula), three Chinese egrets, and one slow loris.
Masrur revealed, the modus of the suspect was making online trade. However, in some cases, there were also face to face transactions.
The two suspects were in detention and objected to Article 40 paraghraph (2) jo Article 21 paragraph (2) of Indonesian Law No.5 year 1990 concerning conservation.
"We remind people not to trade protected animals, because there are legal sanctions for the perpetrators. We are committed to law enforcement in order to save endangered animals to live sustainable in nature in accordance with their original habitat," said Masrur.
