Penepah Lestari Forest Farmers Group in Kaong Village, Upau Sub-district, Tabalong, South Kalimantan, produces liquid disinfectant by utilizing palm shell as raw material as an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease or COVID-19.
Chief of the farmers' group Antonius here on Monday (April 6, 2020) said, the palm shells, provided as assistance by the PT Agro Lestari 1, Tanjung, Tabalong, used as raw material for making disinfectant liquid smoke.
"This is a new experience and skill after attending training from the South Kalimantan Forestry Agency," he said.
One behalf of Forest Farmers Group (KTH), Antonius thanked Astra Agro for providing palm shell and would be processed using smoke processing aid from the Forest Agency.
Head of the Tabalong Technical Implementation Unit of Forestry Agency (UPT Dinas kehutanan) Erwin welcomed the concern and attention of Astra Agro in supporting government programs, especially in the effort to prevent the transmission of Coronavirus disease through the manufacture of disinfectant from liquid smoke.
It is said to be an alternative amid the scarcity of disinfectants on the market.
Within two hours an average of seven liters of disinfectant is produced, and to processing liquid smoke by using water, the more heat the faster production..
"The result of the water vapor is used as material for making disinfectant. There has been training for farmers group to making of disinfectant liquid smoke. It has never been developed in our area," he said.
PT Astra Agro Lestari 1 Tanjung administrator Unari Sarmidi said, there were three KTH and two Rubber Marketing Management Units (UPPB) in the district we assisted by providing palm shell to make smoke liquid disinfectant. They were KTH Penepah Lestari in Kaong Village, Upau Sub-district, KTH Gunung Batuah in Santu'un Village, Muara Uya Sub-district, KTH Sampaga in Burum Village, Bintang Ara sub-district.
Then UPBB Ngudi Mulyo in Agro Mulyo Village, Bintang Ara Sub-district, and UPBB Sinar Mulya in Hayup Village, Haruai sub-district.
