The North Hulu Sungai (HSU) Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) stated based on the results of snacks samples testing during 2019 it was concluded one in ten snacks contained hazardous substances.

"We took as many as 481 samples of food and snacks in HSU District in 2019 and 10 percent contained hazardous ingredients. This means that out of 10 samples there was one containing dangerous substances," Head of BPOM HSU Bambang Hery Purwanto remarked here, Tuesday (Jan 28, 2020).

He said, the dangerous substances often found were borax and formalin in crackers and Rhodamine B red dye in wet cakes. Samples were taken from markets, schools, and other public spaces.

But overall, of three districts of HSU BPOM's working area, namely HSU, Balangan, and Tabalong, the percentage of samples containing dangerous substances in 2019 has decreased compared to 2018.

"In 2018 the number of samples containing hazardous ingredients was 11 percent, in 2019 it decreased to 6 percent," Bambang pointed out.

Bambang urged street vendors not to mix hazardous materials, such as Rhodamine B, borax thickeners, and Formalin preservatives in snacks.

In particular, he encouraged them to maintain food hygiene by avoiding food from dust and bacteria in the air and cleaning hands when serving buyers.
