Syamsudin Noor Banjarmasin International Airport has installed thermal scanner as precautionary measures against the novel corona virus (2019-nCoV), originating in Wuhan City, China. 


Head of the International Airport's Communication and Legal Aditya Putra Patria here on Friday (Jan 24, 2020) said, the device to monitor passengers' body temperature has been installed since Thursday (Jan 23, 2020).

"So when they (passengers) pass through their body temperature can be directly scanned," he pointed out.

He said the installation of the device was the initiative of the Ministry of Health carried out by Port Health Office (KKP) here by placing some officers at the arrival terminal to prevent the virus.

"We hope this device (thermal scanner) can provide security and comfort for people in South Kalimantan, as this airport is passed through by 8.000 to 9.000 passengers daily as entrance to outsiders, and we have tried to prevent the spread of the corona virus," he stated.

The operator of the thermal scanner Bahriansyah said, the scanning device is equipped with a screen monitor automatically records or captures any passengers whose body temperature is above 38 degrees.

Anyway, it cannot ascertain if anyone with  high body temperature is infected by the virus. "The device cannot ascertain the type of anybody's illness. But any passenger recorded with a high temperature above 38 degrees, he will be checked to ensure the source of the heat," he explained.

It can be sourced from other equipment, such as cellphone, but if it comes from the body, the passenger is advised to undergo examination to the lab or hospital.

Meanwhile, as of Friday, 830 people in 29 provinces had been infected with the new 2019-nCoV virus which causes severe pneumonia, the Chinese health authorities said.

Of that number, 25 people died and 34 were allowed to leave the hospital.
