Industrial zones are projected to act as the driving force for economic growth and serve as economic centers to propel equitable development in the country, an official of the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs stated.

"This is since industrial zones will offer added value, absorb workforce, attract investment, and boost exports," the ministry's Deputy for Trade and Industry Coordination Bambang Adi Winarso stated during a dialog on priority industrial zone development here on Tuesday.

Winarso noted that industrial zones are also expected to function as economic hubs that will encourage equitable economic development in Indonesia.

"It should be focused on the downstream industry that is based on local natural resources to produce different products," he emphasized.

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita had earlier noted that industrial zones held potential to become the driving force for the economy.

"In its efforts to develop inclusive industrial zones, the government has attempted to encourage development of the industrial zone outside Java Island," Kartasasmita stated.

The industrial zone in Java Island will prioritize the development of advanced technology-based, labor-intensive, and low-consumption industries.

In the meantime, the industrial zone outside Java Island will be focused on the development of the natural resource-based industry and logistical system.

"Hence, we will not only build the industry but will also become the new economic centers in regions where its development is integrated," the minister added.
