Tamban pineapple (local people call it kanas, so the popular name is kanas tamban) tastes sweet, contains a lot of water, but almost no sour. Kanas tamban plantation is in Tamban, Barito Kuala District. It is the main production of pineapple in South Kalimantan. 

It different from honey pineapple (nenas madu) which is abundant in Indonesia, especially in high land, which tastes sweet,  but there is still a sour taste.

It almost the same with paun pineapple, which big size to sometime more than five kilogram a piece, but its shriveling exceeds the honey pineapple. That is why people in general prefer to make paun pineapple as raw material for making jam as it has a lot of fiber.

But, kanas tamban, an addition for salad or rujak is also served as jam.

Kanas tamban is said originates from varieties of Bangka pineapple. While Tamban is the name of  transmigration settlement in beginning of 1950, which formerly a part of Banjar District, but then become part of Barito Kuala District.

Tamban pineapple production began booming in Banjarmasin fruit market in 1960s, when South Kalimantan consisted of nine districts (now 13 districts and citites).

Residents in Tamban transmigration (about 40 kilometers from Banjarmasin) began to plant pineapple as intercrop in opening their agriculture. But in 1960s, pineapple became their business. It was since that time, pineapple became a vast plantation in the tidal farming area of Barito Kuala.
