Indonesia's inflation rate rose 0.31 percent in July 2019 driven by a hike in the prices of red chili, bird's eye chili, rice, and tuition fees, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted.


"The prices of several commodities rose in July 2019, including of chili, owing to the public's dependence on the commodity," BPS Head Suharyanto remarked in Jakarta on Thursday.

He stated that red chili and bird's eye chili had contributed 0.20 percent and 0.06 percent respectively to the July 2019 inflation rate.

The July 2019 inflation was affected by the rising prices of several other food items, including cucumber, green chili, apple, and pear.

In the education group, the hike in tuition fees at senior high schools contributed 0.02 percent and at elementary schools contributed 0.01 percent to the July 2019 inflation rate.

Spending on transportation, communication, and financial services decreased 0.36 percent.

The July 2019 inflation rate brought the calendar inflation rate for the January-July 2019 period to 2.36 percent and year-on-year inflation rate to 3.32 percent.

"Judging by the inflation rate in July 2019, the inflation rate was relatively under control," he pointed out.

Transportation, communication, and financial services registered a deflation of 0.06 percent.

He added that 55 out of the 82 cities surveyed for consumer price index (IHK) recorded inflation, while 27 cities witnessed a deflation.

"The highest inflation of 1.88 percent was recorded in Sibolga (North Sumatra) with IHK of 148.33, and the lowest inflation of 0.01 percent was recorded in Makassar (South Sulawesi) with IHK of 139.39," Suharyanto stated.

The highest deflation of 1.55 percent was recorded in Tual (Maluku), with IHK of 158.34, and the lowest deflation of 0.02 percent was witnessed in Gorontalo, with IHK of 132.42.
