The Hulu Sungai Utara (HSU) District Government through the Agriculture Agency prepares dozens of water pumps and expand rice planting area to cope with the dry season.

Acting head of the agency Yuli Hertawan here on Thursday said, although the potential for crop failure due to drought is very low in HSU, even the planting area tends to be wider, but it remains vigilant in anticipating by preparing various facilities and infrastructure.

"To anticipate the drought in the field, we have prepared 174 of 6 inch water pumps, 66 of 3 inch water pumps, 17 reservoir and 15 long storage," Yuli remarked.

Water pumps will be channeled to farmer groups whose land is prone to drought. The agency also works with the BPBD and the Food Security Office to anticipate the drought.

She pointed out, based on production in 2018, grain stocks at the farm level still meet rice food needs for 1.5 years until June 2020 assuming no grain is sold outside the region.

For food availability facing long droughts, the HSU Food Security Office has a regional food reserve development program.

"So far there have been no cases of chronic food insecurity and transients, but the program continues to be distributed to food insecure areas after natural disasters, most often due to residential fires," explained Head of the Field of Availability and Distribution of Food Entin Lestanti.

Entin explained, in addition to the regional government that has 2.5 tons of dry grain reserves, farmers each harvest also set aside crop yields for reserves.

"We have a food granary program built from DAK funds as many as 14 barns, where farmers can save their crops," she explained.
