Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews) - The South Kalimantan branch for Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) along with the local community hopes that the East Jakarta State Administrative Court (PTUN) Panel of Judges will help to save the Meratus Mountain environment.
Executive Director of Walhi South Kalimantan Kisworo expressed the hope during an interactive dialogue on Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Banjarmasin on Thursday regarding the rejection of the panel of judges against Walhi's lawsuit related to coal mining permits for PT Mantimin Mining Coal (MMC).
In the lawsuit, Walhi requested that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources revoke the mining permit of the company holding the Coal Mining Cooperation Agreement (PKP2B) to mine in the Meratus Mountains in CentralHulu Sungai District (HST), South Kalimantan.
The reason is, according to the environmental activist, if a mining occurs on the Meratus HST cluster, it can increase environmental damage and result in catastrophic flooding.
"Another impact of mining can eliminate or reduce water resources that are a necessity of living things, including humans," he continued answering Antaranews Kalsel after an interactive dialogue guided by Aulia from RRI Banjarmasin.
"Walhi continues to advocate for the Meratus environment. Therefore, we will appeal the rejection of the East Jakarta PTUN judges," said Kisworo.
A legal expert from Lambung Mangkurat University's Faculty of Law Banjarmasin Fikri argued that Walhi's move in advocating Meratus was correct.
"But why do the East Jakarta State Administrative Court judges reject Walhi's claim? Even though the case includes a licensing regime, which means that it also enters the state administration area," said the academician.
