Indeed the main building of Pitap Dam in the Meratus Mountains area is complete, but not yet fully functional,
Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - Chairman of Commission II South Kalimantan Legislative Council (DPRD) Suwardi Sarlan expects the Pitap Dam in Balangan District, the northern region of the province, to function fully.

"Indeed the main building of Pitap Dam in the Meratus Mountains area is complete, but not yet fully functional," he said in Banjarmasin on Monday.

According to the legislator from the electoral districts of South Kalimantan V (North Hulu Sungai, Balangan, and Tabalong), the dam is not fully functional because some irrigation networks for water distribution have not yet been completed. For example, the third and fourth divisors.

Suwardi, who also Chairman of the United Development Party (PPP) faction,is optimistic with the completion of the Pitap Dam a whole agricultural business or rice production will increase.

"Because the technical irrigation system will be able to set the cropping patterns, such as two harvests in a year, and in turn South Kalimantan's rice production can also increase," he continued.

South Kalimantan with an area of ??about 3.7 million hectares and a population of four million is more an agrarian area, but some agricultural land are in the form of rainfed rice fields.

To support the development of agriculture and as an effort to increase production in the province, which consisting of 13 districts and cities, several large-scale dams are built to irrigate 3000 to 6,000 ha rice fields.

A number of such dams include Amandit Dam in South Hulu Sungai (HSS), Batang Alai in Central Hulu Sungai (HST), and Kinarum Dam in Tabalong.

Then the central government under the leadership of President Joko Widodo through a national strategic project (PSN) intends to build Pipitak Jaya Dam in Tapin District.
