Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - The shocks from an earthquake measuring 6.6 in magnitude (M), which occurred around 68 kilometers (km) northwest of Tuban district, East Java province, were sensed in a number of areas in Bali province on Friday.
"There was no tsunami potential (caused by the disaster)," the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported on its official site.
The quake occurred at around 5:55 p.m. Central Indonesia Standard Time (WITA) on Friday at 6.29 degrees south latitude (LS) and 111.92 degrees east longitude (BT) at a depth of 632 km.
Still, the agency appealed to the public to remain vigilant for any aftershocks that may occur.
Meanwhile, a number of residents in Denpasar city left their residences and offices due to the vibrations caused by the quake.
"Earlier, the shocks sensed were quite strong," a resident of Denpasar city Ni Komang Desiantari recalled, adding that she felt the tremors for more than 10 seconds.
According to BMKG, the quake was sensed at a maximum intensity of V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in Kuta, Bali province.
In Bali province, the vibrations were also felt in Gianyar at level IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale and at level III in Tabanan.
BMKG recorded that the quake was sensed by people in 33 regions in the provinces of West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) at level II–V on the MMI scale.
Shocks with an intensity of MMI II can cause light, hanging objects to sway, while vibrations on MMI III scale feel similar to a truck passing close by.
Meanwhile, MMI IV scale tremors can cause pottery to break, windows and doors to creak, and cause walls to make noise.
Furthermore, MMI V scale vibrations can be felt by almost all residents, wake many people up, overturn unstable objects, and can cause pendulum clocks to stop.
As of 6:43 p.m. WITA on Friday, BMKG had recorded one aftershock with a magnitude of 5.5.
