Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - South Kalimantan provincial government continues to fight for the central government to re-open the rattan exports to some importing countries namely China, Japan, and several European countries.


Governor of South Kalimantan Sahbirin Noor in Banjarmasin on Monday said several businessmen and farmers complained rattan export closing policy, which has made thousands of cane farmers in this area have lost their livelihoods.

"We're going to help cane farmers by asking the central government that rattan exports to be reopened," he said.

According to Sahbirin, his party will rediscuss the matter with the relevant parties, to make sure the steps that must be taken and efforts to help farmers cope with rattan price slump.

Secretary General of the Association of Kalimantan Rattan Farmers, Traders and Industry (Peppirka) Irwanriadi revealed, as a result of rattan export ban policy now the price of cane has fallen dramatically.

Earlier, the price of cane at the farm level reached Rp4.000-Rp5.000 per kilogram, now only Rp750 per kilogram. While the payment always faltered.

"Currently, rattan is of no value, only Rp750 per kilogram, that was paid when recalled, if not remember, can be no paid at all," he said.

Such conditions, he said, making the rattan farmers are now choosing to sell their land to the coal mining company and oil palm plantations.

To make a living, farmers choose to become plantation workers and others, as long as it can support their families.

"The condition is certainly very unfortunate. Looking at environmental sustainability, coal is not a natural resource that can be fixed, in contrast with rattan can continue to be planted and continue to grow," he said.
