Kotabaru, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Kotabaru District, South Kalimantan, has the potential to experience food insecurity that the local government needs to anticipate, a legislator said.
Hj Alfisah from Commission II of the Kotabaru Legislative Council (DPRD) here on Friday said that based on the information of a government working unit (SKDP) of the provincial government that food insecurity has the potential to occur in the district.
The reason is that the ratio of population to rice production in Kotabaru is not balanced.
"The need for food for the people of Kotabaru is mostly supplied from outside the province, such as Sulawesi and Java," said Alfisah, the former Speaker of the DPRD.
Thus, she said, if the food supplies from these areas stop, then food insecurity can really occur.
"Fortunately, the trade and distribution of necessities from outside the province to Kotabaru is very smooth, so that the potential of food insecurity hopefully will not happen," she said.
The legislature, she added, will support the program to be made by the Kotabaru Agriculture Agency or the Food Security Agency in anticipating food insecurity by increasing food productivity.
"DPRD will approve the SKPD budget proposal in the Kotabaru budget related to food security," she expounded.
