Kotabaru, South Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalimantan) - Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries clean up trashes along the coast and beaches of Kotabaru District, South Kalimantan, involving 1,000 students and the local community.
Director General of Marine Coasts and Small Islands at the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry Sudirman Saad through written speech read by Assistant Deputy of Science Technology and Society at Technology Research and Higher Education Ministry A Dading Gunadi said on Friday clean and sustainable coast is not enough by just reducing waste and or other pollution materials.
"We need to ensure the sustainability of the carrying capacity of coastal and marine areas while maintaining and increasing the presence of coastal and marine resources," he explained.
Efforts to control pollution in coasts and marine requires the continuous participation of all parties. Coastal activities conducted in Kotabaru is a series of activities in 14th Archipelago Day, Kotabaru 2014. This activity consists of cleaning beaches and mangrove vegetation.
He said the activities are to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of coastal and marine areas as well as the prevention of pollution.
Activities of cleaning beaches and mangrove planting carried out in Gedambaan Beach involving 1,000 people consisting of 500 students, 300 of coastal communities, and 200 people in the whole regional working Unit (SKPD), military, police and NGOs.
