Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Riam Kiwa, one of river basin areas (DAS) that cross the Banjar District, South Kalimantan, overflowed and is feared to submerge ready to plant rice seeds (locally known as lacak).
Antara News South Kalimantan reporter who just returned from the upstream area of the Banua Anam on Monday reported the water had approached the riverbank.
Bumi Barakat Banjar farmers are worried if rain falls in the next two or three days the water will overflow riverbank to reach the height of 30-50 cm and submerge their ready to plant rice seeds till damage or die.
"This lacak is our preparation to go down for farming next month (Jumadil Akhir 1442 Hijriah). If they die submerged in water, we are forced to prepare it again," said some farmers in Astambul Sub-district, Banjar.
In Banjar District, there are two large river basin areas, Riam Kanan and Riam Kiwa, which are in the upstream areas of the Meratus Mountains. If both flooding could also inundate several areas of the "City of a Thousand River" Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan.
Banjar District is South Kalimantan's rice barn with various local varieties. Thy areas scatter in the Sub-districts of Gambut, Sungai Tabuk, and Kertak Hanyar.
