Kandangan, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - South Hulu Sungai (HSS) Regent H Achmad Fikry and Deputy Regent Syamsuri Arsyad launched an organic farming area in Gambah Dalam Barat Village, Kandangan Subdistrict, Thursday (1/3).

The land that became a demonstration plot for the development of organic agriculture, said Acting Head of Agriculture Agency M. Noor, is in the Budi Bakti farmer group in Gambah Dalam Barat Village.

"The area is around 49 hectares, consisting of 7, 4 hectares of dry land, which is used for duck and Palawija agricultural land, while the rest is for rice crops," he said.

The declaration of this organic farming area begins with the release of ducks because it applies a system of rice and duck with the hope that there are mutual benefits between rice and ducks.

Ducks will get food and rice to avoid pests such as snails, leafhoppers and grasshoppers. Ducks that are released for approximately two and a half months later can be harvested or marketed for meat when the rice bear fruit.

Regent H. Achmad Fikry said the launching of this organic farming area to further strengthen organic agriculture in HSS. In the future, he said, special rice mills will be prepared, which do not coincide with rice not from the organic farming process.

"All this is done further strengthens the determination of the next five years, to maximize organic-based agriculture. We invite all HSS communities to start using healthy rice from organic farming," he said.
