Kotabaru, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - Kotabaru Fisheries Agency, South Kalimantan, along with several related agencies, on Friday held a mediation to reconcile the two village fishermen who were in conflict.

Tension starts from the loss of rengge (fishing gear in the form of nets stretched on the sea) belonging to the fishermen of Teluk Gosong Village, East Pulau Laut Subdistrict, in the waters of Manti Island, Sebuku Island Subdistrict, about a week ago.

"He throws to the sea of 50 sets, the next morning we found only 20 sets. Where are the remaining of 30 sets? Then they patrolled and destruction happened. But they did not know who took it?" said Teluk Gosong Village Chief Syamsul.

The incident led to the destruction of lampara (a simple form of trawl) fishing gear belonging to the fishermen of Gedambaan Village, North Pulau Laut Subdistrict, which was blamed as the perpetrators.

Sugian Noor, a fisherman who was the victim of fishing gear damage, did not accept it, because he felt did not do what was alleged.

"Suddenly a group of people attacked, our lampara was damaged. I wanted to fight, but they were many," he told.

Mediation went tough because both parties demanded compensation. However, finally, peace can be achieved with a compensation agreement borne by the government.

"We will budget the reimbursement in 2019," said Head of Kotabaru Fisheries Agency Mochran Rasyid.

In addition, fishermen who are still using lampara are required to switch, because the fishing gear is according to the rules not environmentally friendly so that its use is prohibited.

"Hopefully there will be other tools used because the lampara is not used the whole year. In certain seasons they use other tools," he added.
