Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - President Director of Ulin General Hospital Dr. Suciati said the invention of a baby breathing apparatus by the Ulin medical team proved to be able to reduce infant mortality.


Suciati in Banjarmasin on Sunday said based on data since 2008 the device was invented it has been able to reduce the rate of infant mortality due to respiratory problems from 15 to 9 percent in 2014.

The finding is recorded in the 2018 Top 40 Public Service Innovation List through the Decree of the Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (PAN-RB) No. 636/2018.

South Kalimantan Governor Sahbirin Noor hopes the discovery of breath aids by the Ulin Hospital's medical team continue to be developed to reduce infant mortality due to respiratory distress. "I am very proud and appreciate the innovation," he said.

"I hope, the discovery will be able to reduce infant mortality in South Kalimantan," he said.

Previously, the Governor received an award from the Vice President HM Jusuf Kalla for the discovery of the alternative breathing apparatus for babies which is known as the Babies Respiratory Distress Recovery Device (BIRD).

The inventor of the infant breathing apparatus Dr. Ari Yunanto SpA said the innovation originated from his concern for infant mortality due to respiratory distress.

According to him, the three main causes of death in infants in South Kalimantan are respiratory distress, infection, and low birth weight or premature.

Meanwhile, he said, breathing aids that can provide continuous positive pressure or "continuous positive airway pressure" (CPAP) are very limited.

"The number of CPAPs in hospitals and community health centers in the districts and cities of South Kalimantan is very limited," he said.
