Nusa Dua, (Antaranews Kalsel) - John Cabot, a speaker from Rome University, said the negative campaign, bad reputation, and boycott on palm oil could endanger the achievement of the SDGs goals. because oil palm is one of the crops with a high level of sustainability.

"Talking about palm oil, it will about advertising, promotion, and market share wars," he said at the 2018 Indonesia Palm Oil Conference which took place in Nusa Dua, Bali, Friday (11/2).

He explained the negative image of oil palm and its relation to trade war based on the research he did. He examined the implications of labeling "free from palm oil" in food products in the European Union (EU).

In Europe today there are fears about oil palm which is highly imaged. According to him, if there is a label "free from", consumers will usually feel relieved and will buy the product.

He said the label "no palm oil" was carried out for commercial purposes, especially for market differentiation and the "palm washing" and non-governmental organization movements had a very significant role in this campaign.

"The advertising war against oil palm is largely due to the negative image of palm oil as a product that is hazardous to health, not environmentally sustainable, and socially dangerous, especially in terms of employment," he said.

"Palm oil is rumored to have a high fat content, a lot of contamination, and is very carcinogenic even though the arguments are often made even though it has not been scientifically proven," he pointed out.

The boycott of palm oil, according to him, could jeopardize the achievement of the SDGs' objectives, while sustainable palm oil can have an impact on achieving the SDGs goals.

In war advertising, we must be able to see who the enemy, which is clearly the enemy is not consumers because they actually become victims.

"The palm oil industry needs to educate NGOs, tell them that they are wrong and that a good balance between nature and humans also needs to be supported, and currently Indonesia is heading towards a better direction," he said.
