Banjarmasin, (Antaranews) - The government-owned tap water company PDAM Bandarmasih in Banjarmasin no longer worries about the salt content of the Martapura River, because the saltiness is low.

Public Relations of PDAM Bandarmasih M Nur Wakhid told the press in Banjarmasin on Thursday that the Martapura River salt level was 800 milligrams per liter before, whereas the quality was only 250 milligrams per liter.

But the rain in several locations of the upstream of the river has caused the saltiness level dropped and now only 17 milligrams per liter or far below the threshold.

According to Nur Wakhid, despite having high levels of salt, but the raw water was mixed with water in the booster of Jalan Pramuka, so it could still be used for the production of clean water.

But if the condition of the salt level continues to increase, it is possible that the intake in the Bilu River will stop, he explained.

Meanwhile, based on BMG's forecast, the weather will return to rain. At least this October, that means salt levels due to seawater intrusion can be controlled, he added.

Usually, if the salt content of the Martapura River is high, the most affected is the Bilu River intake, while the Tabuk River intake is less influenced.

The Tabuk River is still far upstream of the Martapura River and is less likely to be exposed to seawater intrusion. Thus the intake is the mainstay of the company's raw water which has a capacity of 4500 cubic meters per hour.
