Paringin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - Residents of Balangan, South Kalimantan, since the last one year began to busy cultivating chili plants, following the increasing price on the market.

One of the farmers, Judin, in Paringin, the capital of Balangan, said on Friday that the cultivation of this vegetable commodity is enough to produce and a lot of people work with it.

"The price of chili on the market is quite high, so many people, both individuals and groups, cultivate chili. The yield is also good, while it provides a substantial profit," he said.

According to him, chili cultivation business emerged after the price of rubber, which used to be the main livelihood in the region, continued to plummet, until rubber tapping was no longer considered to provide welfare.

This condition makes a lot of sleeping land that previously was not cultivated and left without attention now being worked to the maximum and turned into chili fields, and the results are quite good.

"The price of chili, called Lombok tiung, is Rp35,000 per kg. If in a day 4 kg can be harvested, then a farmer earns Rp140 thousand per day," he said.

Compared to rubber tapping which produced 10 kg a day, while lum rubber prices only Rp5,000 per kg, a farmer then earned only Rp50,000 per day.

"Looking at the comparison, the people are busy switching to chili cultivation, even a lot of rubber land actually is still productive cut down and transformed into chili fields," he told.

He said, the price of chili is now arguably cheap because it had previously penetrated IDR 80 thousand per kg. While no matter how much chili produced by farmers, buyers always buy it.

"Buyers come to farmers. They come from various regions, from the district capital of Balangan, from Banjarmasin, even from the neighboring provinces of East Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan," he said.
