Kotabaru, S Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Residents of Jalan Purwosari Semayap, North Pulau Laut, Kotabaru, worked in communal cooperation (traditionally known as gotong-royong) to clean up the river to anticipate flooding..
"Because there is a lot of garbage if it rains along with the tide of sea water, floods sometimes occur," said the coordinator of the gotong-royong action who is also head of RT (Neighborhood Unit) 6 Semayap, Slamet Kadimun, Saturday.
He told, the flood from the overflowing river water can enter the residents' houses. Siltation of the river becomes one of the factors causing flooding in this region.
Residents lifted mud and debris causing siltation. Previously, river cleansing has also been done, but changing the habit of residents not to throw garbage into the river is still difficult.
"Three months ago it was cleaned up, but still a lot of residents who throw garbage into the river," complained Slamet.
According to residents, decades ago the river can be passed by ship. However, this time the water is not even up to the knee of an adult. In addition to silting, the river also almost disappeared closed by the building.
The same condition generally occurs in the river basin at Jalan Purwosari and Jalan Mega Indah. Therefore, the gotong royong is expected to be followed by residents in other areas.
