Kotabaru, S. Kalimantan, June 12 (Antara) - The district administration of Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, hopes to expand rice cultivation 7,500 hectares with high yield hybrid seeds.

Acting head of the Food crop and Horticulture and Animal Husbandry office of Kotabaru, Budi Antara, said the 7,500 hectare expansion is planned in 17 of 21 sub-district of the regency.

"The expansion of 7,500 hectares is expected to increase Kotabaru rice production to 75,000 tons per year to contribute to the country`s food sufficiency program," Budi said here on Monday.

The district administration would grow hybrid rice seed with proper fertilization to ensure high productivity, he said.

The productivity is expected to rise by more than 50 percent to 10 tons from 6 tons of unhulled rice per hectare a years, he said.
