Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Members of Water and Air Police Unit (Satpolairud) of Banjarmasin City Police cleaned up garbage that accumulated to cover part of the Martapura River.

"We together with the volunteers clean up the waste on Martapura River that looks so much and disrupt the river transportation traffic," said Satpolairud chief Comr (Kompol) Untung Widodo here, Thursday.

Satpolairud deployed a patrol boat as well as a small speedboat to dispel a pile of rubbish consisting mostly of twigs and scraps of wood and banana trees.

"The garbage that accumulates under Sudimampir Bridge to cover the river, so boat or ship can not pass," said Untung who led the cleaning activities.

He said, the pile of garbage that almost every year happened is very disturbing traffic flow onMartapura River that divides the city of Banjarmasin.

Untung also claimed to have coordinated with the Head of Public Works Ridwan, and received information that the local government can not do much because the cleaning boat is in repair.

"Usually there is a broom ship routinely deployed by local government to clean up garbage in the river, but since it can not be used so we get down to help," said officer who is familiar with the media crew.

On that occasion, Satpolairud also appealed to the people, especially those living on the banks of the river so as not to dispose of any garbage at random, let alone throw into the river.

"The phenomenon of this pile of garbage is an example of the bad consequences of some people who throw garbage into the river," he said.
