State-owned electricity company PT PLN confirmed its readiness to realize energy transition agenda to achieve net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060 through strategic efforts presented at a media briefing in Jakarta, Tuesday (September 17, 2024).
"We are planning an energy tansition with a target of 2060 net zero emissions and PLN very committed to realizing that," PLN Risk Management Director Suroso Isnandar noted in a press statement through PT PLN South and Central Kalimantan Main Distribution Unit (UID Kalselteng) in Banjarbaru, Friday.
PLN proposed an energy transition road map to be carried out together with the government through the 2021-2030 Electricity Supply General Plan (RUPTL) which is the greenest in history by increasing new and renewable based-energy generating capacity until 2030 by 51.6 percent or 21 gigawatt (GW).
The government and PLN support this step by preparing Accelerated Renewable Energy Development (ARED) program which focus on "coal phase down", reducing the use of coal gradually at coal-fired power plants (PLTUs).
"Through ARED, PLTUs are not killed immediately. It's not coal phase out, but coal phase down," said Suroso.

He confirmed that PLN had also removed the list of PLTU construction in its future investment plans.
Then, facilitate the addition of capacity of about 75 percent of NRE-based plants and 25 percent gas-based plants until 2040.
"PLN targets to add capacity of NRE-based generating capacity of 66,000 MW by 2040. The development of renewable energy includes solar, wind, geotherman and biomass power, which is expected to be able to replace fossil energy in the long term," he said.
PLN has also applied co-firing technology at 46 coal-fired power plants (PLTU), using biomass as a substitute for coal. It will be extended to 52 PLTU in 2025.
PLN will begin carbon trading at 55 PLTUs. PLN has also launched green product innovations through Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) service to push effective reduction of carbon emission in energy sector.
A researher from Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) Abra Talattov on the same occasion assessed the important role of PLN in accelerating energy transition from fossil-based plants to renewable energy.
"Through RUPTL, Indonesia targets an addition of about 51 percent renewable energy electricity generation by 2030. This is a very progressive step toward a greener future," he said.
REC that PLN offers, he said, is a solution for industries want to switch to clean energy and PLN's various green steps not only have an impact to the environment, but also able to create new jobs and support economic growth.
"Green investment can open up quality formal job opportunities, supporting middle class, as well as strengthening the economy toward a Golden Indonesia 2045. All of these are important contribution to development and people's welfare," he said.
