Banjarmasin City in South Kalimantan was listed among 1,000 best cities in the world based on Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2024, which is issued by Oxford Economics.
"Based on the survey conducted by the Oxford Economics, our city (Banjarmasin) is in the 1,000 best cities in the world, ranked 593rd," said Mayor Ibnu Sina.
Ibnu Sina extended the news in his official statement, Friday (June 7, 2024), after attending World Cities Summit (WCS) held in Singapore June 2-4, 2024.
In fact, if we look at the data, Banjarmasin City was above Jambi (610), Samarinda (613), Pontianak (618), Pekalongan (706), Cirebon (731) and Tasikmalaya (795).
Meanwhile, other cities in Indonesia higher than Banjarmasin were Medan (470), Makassar (454), Padang (479), Yogyakarta (489), Denpasar (495), Mataram (507), Palembang (517), and Bandar Lampung (519).
Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index ranks the top cities in the world based on five categories: Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance.
"So, that's what are collected to produce overall score for each city," pointed out Ibnu Sina.
Oxford Economics, he said, estimates the cities around the world will continue to drive global growth and global competitiveness over next few decades.
"In 2023, the world's 1,000 largest cities contributed 60 percent of the world GDP," said Ibnu Sina.
According to him, every city has unique characteristics that are different. Assessing the strength and weakness of cities is very important for businesses, academics and policy makers to be able to make the right decision.
"Comparing cities is not only based on the output of economic growth, there are other dimensions that make cities attractive to residents and investors. For this reason, Oxford Economics launched the Global City Index," said Ibnu Sina.
