The South Kalimantan Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has educated students from early education to high school about earthquake disaster mitigation.    

Head of Prevention and Preparedness of the South Kalimantan BPBD Bambang Dedi Mulyadi here said the education was a follow up of six earthquakes that tremored parts of South Kalimantan in February 2024.

“We are strengthening mitigation through Disaster Safe Education Unit Program (SPAB) 2024. This is one of the local government quick response, so that people do not panic about the recent earthquake,” he said after the socialization at SMAN 2 Banjarbaru City.

Governor Sahbirin Noor, he said, gave specific direction for BPBD to take a quick action to strengthen mitigationprogram which is of particular concern to the community.

“This SPAB program related to introduction of disaster mitigation, especialy earthquake,” he said.

Through this education, Bambang said, students, teachers and education staff know about various disasters that could occur in their surrounding and know how to evacuate themselves when disaster occurs.

According to him, there is a need for effective communication media for students and education personnel related to disaster mitigation, one of them is an internal organization such as disaster resilient school.

In addition to providing education on quake mitigation, BPBD also seek to make a better relation with the community to facilitate each program to prevent and handling disaster in the region.

Bambang said that the education is not only provided at schools, it could be anywhere related to the safety of the community.

Principal of SMAN 2 Banjarbaru Saryono welcomed the SPAB 2024 program implemented by BPBD.

“This program really helps teachers and students to increase their knowledge about disaster mitigation, especially earthquake,” he said.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded six small-scale earthquake in parts of South Kalimantan in February 2024.
