University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) planted more than a thousand tree seedlings on Mount Pamaton in Kiram Village, Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan, to support the Environment and Forestry (LHK) Ministry lowering forestry sector emissions.

"We plant mahagony trees for reforestation on Mount Pamaton, which is an important river basin area," said ULM Chancellor Prof. Ahmad Alim Bachri here, Monday.

As many as thousand students, including staff and lecturers, were deployed by the leading university in the planting action.

Alim said Mount Pamaton is part of the ULM Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK) as well as watershed (DAS) area rehabilitated by PT Adaro Indonesia covering an area of 321 hectares.

Thus, he acknowledged, ULM fully support tree planting program by LHK Ministry, because it is in accordance with ULM's vision and mission. 

“As part of the national forestry community, ULM will secure the planting not only at the planting stage but also caring for them until they grow big," he pointed out.

It is known that the presence of trees and good land cover can increase nature's carrying capacity in mitigating climate change, food security, energy, and the welfare of all living things. 

LHK Ministry is committed to lowering emissions from forestry and other land uses (Folu) with a target of net sink figure 140 million tons of CO2eq through Indonesia's Folu Net Sink 2030 plan.
