The Provincial Government of South Kalimantan encouraged district and city governments to register geographical indications (IG) for their areas so they have legal force as regional intellectual property.

"At least one potential in each region is registered as an IG with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights," said South Kalimantan Government's Expert Staff for Political and Legal Sulkan here, Monday.

Sulkan, representing Governor H Sahbirin Noor, conveyed this in the 2024 geographical indications (IG) promotion and dissemination held by the South Kalimantan Office of Law and Human Right Ministry in Banjarmasin.

IG is a sign that indicates the area of origin of a product which, due to geographical environmental factors, including natural or human factors or a combination of both, gives a certain reputation, quality and certain characteristics to the goods produced.

"One thing we are proud of is Sasirangan cloth which has been registered as communal intellectual property of South Kalimantan," he said.

Even now, he said, Hiyung bird's eye chili, which is a super spicy chili that only grows in the Tapin District area, has also been registered with IG. It is hoped that much more potential in the region to be registered.

If valuable assets registered with IG are managed well and right, they can become means of improving the economy and regional development.

Especially that the Office of Law and Human Right Ministry in the province, said Sulkan, is very consistent in carrying out IG and intelectual property service promotion and dissemination to the regional government and people of South Kalimantan.

The Provincal government, he said, continues to provide support for the growth of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through promotion and dissemination of IG held by the ministry office, so it becomes a mean of protecting regional identity and supporting regional economic development.

Until 2022, he said, there are 364,628 MSMEs have been recorded, which are dominated by micro business, with a total of 328,567 business units. While, small and medium industry in south Kalimantan recorded 131 units.
