The Provincial Government of South Kalimantan has formed the community disaster alert teams in two up and downstream districts, which consist of 19 sub-districts, to anticipate and mitigate disaster emergencies.
“In the upstream area in South Hulu Sungai (HSS) there are 150 people and another 150 people in downstream area in Tanah Bumbu. It is important that special teams are prepared in these areas, so that assistance to the community is not too long during flood conditions,” said Head of Disaster Management of the South Kalimantan Social Office Achmadi in Martapura, South Kalimantan, Monday.
Previously, the Governor of South Kalimantan chaired a preparedness roll call for floods, whirlwind, landslides disasters in Martapura, Banjar District, Monday, to ascertain that all personnel and equipments were being readied to deal with disasters.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has informed that rainy season is beginning in South Kalimantan areas in November 2023.
“During the rainy season, the most vulnerable disasters are floods and landslides. We have provided special training for disaster handling to 300 people in the two districts considered as emergency areas during flood disasters,” he said.
They are 11 sub-districts in HSS where disaster preparedness community teams have been formed, consisting of Angkinang, Daha Barat, Daha Selatan, Daha Utara, Kalumpang, Kandangan, Loksado, Simpur, Padang Batung, Sungai Raya, and Telaga Langsat.
While eight other sub-districts are in Tanah Bumbu, consisting of Karang Bintang, Kuranji, Kusan Hilir, Kusan Hulu, Mantewe, Satui, Simpang Empat, Mantewe, and Sungai Loban.
Some of trainings provided for them, Achmadi expounded, are installing emergency tents, rescuing disaster victims including search and rescue, public kitchen, establishing post command, emergency first aid, collecting data on victims, setting up shelters, and others.
The office has previously provided training for three days to the teams of disaster preparedness. They are provided with material on an ongoing basis until next year.
He said the provincial government will add the number of community disaster preparedness teams in 2024. Currently the 2023 budget is allocated for 19 sub-districts.
“Right now we are focusing on mapping areas to build disaster preparedness post command, especially in up and downstream areas,” said Achmadi.
