South Kalimantan contingent made history as by winning the best ranking its had achieved as the Top Six out of 34 provinces in the 18th National University Students Sports Week by collecting eight gold, seven silver, and 27 bronze medals.


"This is an amazing and very proud achievement, because it was a big suprise during the POMNAS event," said Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) Chancellor Prof Ahmad Alim Bachri in Banjarbaru, Thursday.

In the 17th National University Students Sports Week (POMNAS) in Padang last year, South Kalimantan ranked 22nd, now in the 18th Pomnas it made abig leap to rank six or the Top Six.

He expressed his thanks and high appreciation for the athletes' hard work in competing so they could achieve the mnaximum results.

"As host athletes, South Kalimantan's athletes have shown hteir quality that they can compete at the top of the medal standings," he said.

Alim also expressed his thanks to all contingents and parties who have helped the POMNAS event that took place from 12 to 22 of November 2023 to be successful.

"High appreciation of course goes to Governor of South Kalimantan Uncle Birin, thanks to his willingness and suport we were able to host the POMNAS," he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Students Sports Association (Bapomi) South Kalimantan chapter Muhammad Rusmin Nuryadin said that the achievement of the host contingent was inseparable from the athletes briliant performance in showing their best abilities.

In wrestling, for example, South Kalimantan bagged five gold medals, karate two gold medals, and one gold in rock climbing.

Then kempo won three silvers, and other sports winning bronze medals.

In the 18th POMNAS this year, which involved 2,701 athletes competed in 16 sports, DKI Jakarta emerged victorious as general champion by collecting 68 gold medals, 34 silvers, and 38 bronzes.
