The Kotabaru Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUPR) Office is dredging rivers to normalize them in an effort to reduce the impact of flooding in the district capital.

"The dredging aims to normalize the rivers so they function normally during the rainy season," said Head of PUPR Agency Suprapti Tri Astuti in Kotabaru, Friday.

The dredging, she said, is carried out in several places in the watershed area which causes flooding, especially when water discharge increasing during heavy rains.

It was previously occurred on Baharu River, Dirgahayu River, and Mandin River.

"Dredging is being carried out at the points where there is siltation. The length of the river that is experiencing siltation is around 695 meters," she said.

It might occurred because of material carried by water from upstream, or also caused by behavior of people who still throw garbage into rivers and river banks.

Meanwhile, some unlicensed building are constructed along the river flow caused the river to narrow. Then when the intensity of the rainfall is high, the river quickly overflow.

“Buildings in the river area cause flooding,” she said.

Suprapti hopes, the dredging efforts will reduce the impact of overflowing river during floods.
