Mayor of Banjarmasin H Ibnu Sina expressed his gratitude that the city has a recycling center with a capacity to handle 10 tons of garbage per day.
The recycling center, which was built with the assistance of the central government worth IDR2.1 billion, in Sungai Andai Urban Village, North Banjarmasin Sub-district, was completed this year.
"We are grateful that the recycling center has finally been built. It was a two year delayed program," he said.
In 2019 when the city won Adipura award for the umpteenth time, in addition to receiving regional incentive fund, the central government also promised the construction of a recycling center for Banjarmasin.
"Because of the COVID-19 pandemic it was finally delayed, until it finally materialized this year," he said.
Ibnu Sina said that the recycling center was an appreciation from the central government for the success of Banjarmasin City in effectively reducing plastic bag waste through the Mayor's Regulation No 18 of 2016 concerning reducing the use of plastic bags.
"This recycling center works to sort out plastic and other waste, as well as handling garbage in the river," he said.
Therfore, it was built close to Martapura River, the largest river in the provincial capital of South Kalimantan.
"Hopefully river waste can be pulled here, to be then sorted, which is plastic waste and which waste can be used as compost," he said.
With this recycling center, Ibnu Sina said, especialy with the capacity of up to 10 tons per day, it can reduce the burden at the Basirih final disposal site (TPA) in South Banjarmasin.
"Waste production in this city reaches more than 500 tons per day, there must be various ways to handle it, including sorting and others," said Ibnu Sina.
