Head of Infrastructure of Agriculture of Tabalong Food Crops and Horticulture Agency Sarjono here on Wednesday said the insect pest attacks rice plant belonging to farmer groups Gunung Walet and Tunas Muda in Jaro.

"We have a brigade of protection and will make the handling of armyworm pest attack in the sub-district of Jaro and Upau. Because of limited operational funds, not all pests of rice cultivation can be handled," said Sarjono.

It is feared armyworm pest can reduce rice production in the region in view of armyworms also attacked paddy rice began yellowing resulting stem rot and die.

Armyworm attacks occur at night so that the plants will be exhausted in a short time by the number of cluster caterpillars (armyworm) that reaches thousands.

From the results of data collection, the area paddy field in the sub-district of Jaro under armyworm pests attacked approximately one hectare and is feared if not treated immediately can spread to other areas.

Sarjono requested that the farmers can do to control armyworms utilizing plant-based or synthetic pesticides to prevent attacks more severe.

The Tabalong own acreage reached 15,511 hectares of rice fields with a planting area of ​​16,076 hectares (including the system of planting twice).
