Chairman of South Kalimantan branch of National Sports Committee (KONI) H Bambang Hari Purnama believes that rowing has a great potential to win the first medal in the 20th National Sports Week (PON) in Papua.

The reason is rowing is the flagship sport of South Kalimantan and the match schedule is earlier, starting on September 27, 2021.

"Of course we hope to get the gold medal, we believe our rowers work hard to be able to excel," he said, Thursday.

Bambang said he will witness the rowing athletes of his province compete directly. He hopes to cheer for them and motivate his athletes.

He is confident that he can drape gold medals for his athletes because one of the athletes has a rowing speed that is currently above the national average.

"I have a feeling we can win a gold medal in rowing because the venue is almost the same as the place where our athletes practice," he said.

"The rowing sport is planned to compete in Yutepa Bay, Jayapura city, this is a deep bay just the same as our athletes training in deep river. Whereas in West JavaPON they used an artificial river," he said.

With quite a number of athletes sent to Papua PON, namely 28 male and female, the hope of gaining medals is very large. They will take part in 18 numbers with three categories, namely kayak, canoe, and dragon boat.
