The South Kalimantan Office of Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas Kalsel) took a concrete action to ensure food security at the Batulicin Penitentiary, Tanah Bumbu District.
Head of the South Kalimantan Ditjenpas Mulyadi here on Wednesday said various new programs at the penitentiary have just been inaugurated, one of which is food independence.
"Agriculture, plantation, and animal husbandry are the mainstay programs at Batulicin Penitentiary to meet food needs of inmates (warga binaan)," he said.

Food needs such as vegetables, chicken, eggs and others are met from the prison's own garden.
In fact, some outside vendors buy vegetables from Batulicin Penitentiary to resell at the local markets in Tanah Bumbu.
According to Mulyadi, the success of the program is thank to the role of the local government and the former prison wardens in implementing food self-sufficiency program.

Interestingly, the penitentiary also houses convenience food court nicknamed Mandora 37 Pujasera.
"This is an integrated entrepreneurial activity that includes minimarket, a variety of food and drinks, barbershop, water refill station, crystal ice production, sewing service, and laundry," he explained.
Mulyadi concludes this program is in line with the correctional's vision to develop inmates into independent individuals ready to reintegrate to society.

Batulicin Penitentiary has proven that with creativity and good managementa, limited resources are no obstacle.
"I appreciate extraordinary work of the rank of Batulicin Penitentiary that could have been able to transform the prison with various modern facilities modern and productive program towards food self-sufficiency," he concluded.
