An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 rattled Calang, Aceh Jaya District, Aceh Province, on Sunday night, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.


The epicenter of the earthquake which broke out at 10:05 WIB (Western Indonesian Standard Time)  was located in the sea, 48 kilometers southwest of Aceh Jaya, and at a depth of 49 kilometers, the BMKG said on its official website.

The quake was felt in Banda Aceh and Nagan Raya at II and III on Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) and in Aceh Jaya at III on MMI.,

A quake of MMI II was felt by some people that caused the hung light articles to shake, while a quake of MMI III could be felt indoors akin to the movement of a truck.

No early tsunami warning was issued but the BMKG called on the local residents to remain vigilant of aftershock.

Aceh bore the brunt of 8.9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in December 2004 when more than 120,000 people lost their lives.
