A 5.6-magnitude earthquake was recorded southeast of Sukabumi district, West Java on Tuesday, but no tsunami warning was issued, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.
The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 4:23 p.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB), was located approximately 103 km southeast of Sukabumi (7.86 degrees south latitude and 106.87 degrees east longitude), at a depth of 14 km.
The earthquake, which created panic among local residents, did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami, the BMKG said.
The earthquake was felt by inhabitants of Rangkasbitung and Bandung at III MMI (modified mercalli intensity), and Bogor, South Tangerang, and Jakarta at II MMI.
