South Kalimantan Police recorded IDR3.8 billion material loss suffered by victims of cybercrime throughout 2020 and reminded people to be vigilant against various online crimes.
"We received 185 complaints from the public over the past year," said Head of Cyber Police of the South Kalimantan Police's Directorate of Special Crime Investigation Adj. Sr. Comr. (AKBP) Zaenal Arifien here on Thursday.
He admitted that cybercrime tends to increase from year to year. In 2019, the police accepted 73 public complaints with a total loss of IDR783 million.
Meanwhile, in early 2021 from January to February 37 complaints have been accepted with a loss of IDR638 million.
Zaenal revealed that the modus operandi of this crime included buying and selling smartphones, antiques, bicycles, till the fraudulent lottery.
Not only cheating, cybercriminals also often steal personal data for criminal acts. Such as offering jobs or others until the victim gives his ID data or email address.
"We remind people to watch out and cautious so as not to be easily fooled by cybercrime. Their modes are very diverse and continue to develop. Likewise using social media must be wise so as not to be involved in legal cases," Zaenal reminded.
The South Kalimantan Cyber Police opens complaint services not only physically but also online via Whatsapp at 0811518082 or its website.
Education is also carried out by uploading education content through all social media, namely Instagram @ccic.kalsel and Facebook Siber Kalsel.
