The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that 15 provinces in Indonesia are now on the status of flood alert due to the impact of heavy rains from Saturday to Sunday (Feb 20-21, 2021).
"South Kalimantan is one of the regions with the status of flood alert, even flash flood," said forecaster staff of the Syamsudin Noor Banjarmasin Meteorological Station Rizqi Nur Fitriani in Banjarbaru, Saturday.
While the other 14 provinces, which are forecasted to have the same status, are Bengkulu, Lampung, Banten, DKI Jakarta, West Java, central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and West Papua.
Rizqi said the information on the flood impact-based forecast was based on the heavy rain forecast that has been made by BMKG.
The level of impact or risk is shown in South Kalimantan and 14 provinces in yellow indicating the chance of flooding and the potential impact is at alert.
"This means there is a tendency of high rain to impact minor or light damage as well as carrying out disaster mitigation," he said.
Especially in South Kalimantan, there six areas that are predicted to experience heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds, namely Banjarmasin, Tanah Bumbu, Kotabaru, Barito Kuala, North Hulu Sungai, and Tabalong.
Meanwhile, the potential of waves as high as three meters are in the southern waters of Kalimantan or the Java Sea deserves to be watched out for by fishing boats, ferries, and large vessels.
