Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Piles of garbage in the form of water hyacinth and woods closing Martapura River in the last one week making water transport in Banjarmasin paralyzed.


Some boat owners in Lama Port on Friday admitted they had been four days not able to transport passengers, either for people going to the market or school children.

One of the ship owner, Iwan, told he experiencing losses, because since the last few days the ship only parked at the dock. It was because the river can not be crossed due to covered by trash.

"Yes big loss. This is the only livelihood of our family. If you can not carry passengers meaning you do not have money," he said.

Over the week, the river Martapura, particularly in the area under the Pasar Lama Bridge and Sudimampir Bridge, covered by trash.

River cleaning vessel or usually called Sapu-Sapu Ship which is on the assignment from Rivers and Drainage Management Agency strive to open up the river path, but until Friday afternoon, still not succeeded.

Although the river was open slightly, but only in a matter of minutes, the river re-covered by the garbage that keeps coming.

The waste is mostly water hyacinth mixed with twigs and sticks. Although officials continue to struggle to pull the trash, but the ship can not penetrate the thick garbage stuck under the bridge.

Amid the struggle against the scum, a number of means of transportation such as speetboat and other passenger boats have to wait to get through.
